Cycling helps
- I have been prescribed a massive short term dose of prednisone. So far, it has given me a lot of fat in my face. However, I have been bicycling like a fiend and tons of water. This is the only way I can get any sleep or concentrate. It gets rid of the jitters which without cycling were causing me uncontrolled shaking. Other than fat moving, I have not gained weight so far.

Pred girl
- Reading all your comments made me somewhat relieved. I am not only one suffering from this gaining weight problem because of prednisone. I was diagnosed with SLE 9 months ago and was pregnant, had to undergo C-section and my baby suffered a lot, but thank God it's over. Now I'm taking 10 mg pred for a day and really is hoping to get rid of all the weight I have gained. I have never felt so ugly in my entire life until now, rounded face, fat belly, damn acne and worst is the sweating. I am trying to have an exercise but it seems like I'm getting fatter every day. I guess I will just have to deal with it.

How long does it last?
- Prescribed this med a week ago tomorrow to combat poison Ivy. Already I've gained 6 lbs, though I just worked very hard the past five months to lose 22 lbs. After reading everyone's post, I'm afraid that I will not be able to lose the 24 lbs I planned to. Did anyone ever encounter that problem? Why didn't my doctor warn me about this?

Grateful
- It is 4:50am once again for the 2nd morning and I woke up sweating. I came right to this site and my heart goes out to all of you. I will be taking my 3rd day of prednisone today. Dose prescribed was 3 days of 30mg. 2 days of 20mg. and 1day of 10. I had no idea of the side effects. Am working custodial at a school but just got off for summer break 2 weeks ago, so my activity level has changed. Should have been aware of side effects 3 days ago. WHOA!!! Regular weight for my 50 year old female body at 5'6" is 155 and well distributed. Got up sweaty this morning and stepped on the scale....162!!!!! WHAT?!? I have battled weight over the years and got down to 155 from 185 over the past year and felt very good about my self keeping steady for about 8 months. Only have my 3 days left and just downed a stick of celery. All you wonderful people out there are fighting the largest battle!! My heart and prayers go out to you please be healthy

I hate prednisone!
- I have RA, and take 2.5 mg of prednisone every day. I too suffer mood swings, sweats, brittle bones, and belly fat weight gain...last summer I was size 4 , now I am size 12...and my symptoms are just diminished, not gone..my ears ring constantly...I take depression pills...along with a sleeping pill...and I cannot move enough to exercise ...I am getting bigger and not liking it!

I used to be blessed by my metabolism...
- Now I'm cursed by my arthritis! I've been battling reactive arthritis for almost 4 months now (my doctor said if I don't get better by 6, I will be deemed chronic). I've been on prednisone for the past 3 months, and have put on almost 10 pounds. I'm usually very active, but have been lucky that my metabolism is still kicking from when I played organized sports as a teen (I'm 26 now). I've held steady at around 132 pounds for the past 6-8 years (I'm just about 5'7"). Now I'm teetering over 142 and almost cry each time I weigh myself. I've been eating healthy, but unfortunately because of the arthritis (which affects mostly my lower half), it's hard to go running or even bike. I'm hoping there is light at the end of the tunnel, but it seems each time my dose is lowered (I've been tapering 1 mg every 5 days - only taking 5 mg a day, which is the lowest I've been at), the pain starts and I'm back to square one. It's so frustrating!!

Did at first
- I was given prednisone for UC and I knew I was going to put on weight so started to eat clean and get more active and my weight stayed the same.

Gaining weight from Prednisone
- I am a chronic asthmatic and YES YES YES I gained weight from the use of prednisone. I have been very depressed because of it, although I know what the problem is many others do not and people can be so cruel with their comments. I have retained sooo much fluid that my stomach is huge and I cannot breathe due to the weight gain, kinda defeats the purpose huh? I hate it!!! I also have experienced chipped teeth just like m. dawn, I've never heard anyone else say this thanks for the confirmation M. Dawn

Did You Gain Weight?
- I've had chronic asthma since 5. I'm almost 43. As I read all your posts I've cried and felt inspiration. I'm on pednisone 50 mg for the third time this season. Last season I celebrated turning up to the gym 3 times a week over 3 months. I started to feel better, looks well and the fat pillow behind my neck started to move. But here I am, sick as can be with a virus. My 25 year school reunion only days away and I'll miss it. I look like Shreks mother. But I like me. I know just how hard it's been to stay on board. Sure I cry and I feel disappointed that people don't understand. But you all here do! Everyone of you motivated me. So I deal with my weight gain with determination. I got bigger clothes, joggers, and I will get back to the gym. I watch comedy and I play on the Wii fit. You have to move and play and celebrate how gutsy you are. I do ache, I get the pimple rashes, and I have a dolly face. But I am determined to keep teaching, and beat this flu season. Determined!

Frustrated!!
- Hi . I have UC and was on prednisone for 2 months. It did help my condition and I am now on Asacol. I started with 40mg for two weeks and tapered down. Gained 8lb (4kg). I know it is not much but it seems that the weight is there for good. I always shed weight very fast and easy and now I am exercising and lower a lot my intake but the for a week and a half already and even 100gr doesn't shed. It's like it's stuck there. Is it normal? Or does my body need to stay at that weight? I am 5'2 and now 111lb.

Prednisone
- I've been on prednisone 20 mg every other day for 3 years. I have IGA this has damaged my kidneys. The prednisone has made my face fatter than normal and stretch marks all over my body I've gained 40 pounds. My teeth are chipping, my bones are weaker, but my kidneys are staying ok. This is a bad price to pay for the good it does. Has anyone else gained weight on 20 mg/every other day? My doctor made me feel bad saying that's not just from prednisone. Will my face go down after I taper off the medicine?? Anybody else out there have IGA ?? What works for you??

My love hate relationship w/ Prednisone
- I am 21 years old and have had an eye disease since i was 11 years old. I have tried all sorts of medicines from methotrexate to humira. I am now trying to find out how much it will cost to try Orencia abatacept which is an IV treatment but I have no insurance. I was on humira and plaqeunil for awhile. My eye disease is called dacryoadentis and is causes chronic inflammation in my tear glands and eye tissue. My eyes swell up every morning and now I have what they call a pseudotumor in my left eye that is pressing down on my eye. They have me on a bunch of rheumatoid arthritis drugs that help with inflammation. I tried a medicine awhile ago and after two weeks my eyes were amazing and back to normal, but after two months i developed a rash that covered my whole body. I was so itchy i couldn't leave the house. I just sat around in a baggy tshirt and gained 50 lbs. because I was on steriods at the same time but trying to ween off, unfortunately when I got the rash they made me up my dose.

Moderating what you eat
- I was just diagnosed with UC and lost a bit of weight before being hospitalized. In the hospital I was told I was being given 60 mg of a steroid through IV but noone told me the side effects. I began to crave salt and gain weight immediately. My face turned a weird color and I just felt very FAT. Night sweats were also occuring and trouble breathing. When I arrived home I looked up the side effects of the pred and decided I needed to make a change in my diet. To be honest after a few day of lowering my carb intake and sodium I felt really good. I didn't gain any more weight and my moon face was so slight that no one noticed, it only developed in my cheeks a bit. After a little over a month I have weaned down to the 5mg and feel really good. My cheeks have actually started to go down and my body is going back to normal........ It really is all about what you eat while on the medication. There is hope for prednisone, trust me it will make you feel really good when you beat the effects.
