What are Steroid Injections?

Definition: Steroid injections or shots (sometimes called a "local") involves the injecting of corticosteroid drugs (steroids for short) into one or two specific areas of inflammation allows the doctor to deliver a high dose of medication directly to the bothersome area. When doctors give steroids orally or intravenously, they can not be certain that enough steroid medication will reach the problem area.
Pronunciation: stare-oid in-ject-shun
Also Known As: local injection, cortisone shot
Common Misspellings: steriod innjections
Examples:
The ankle had been so painful, her doctor offered a steroid injection to tame the inflammation.
