Drug Monograph: Rozerem / Ramelteon
Ramelteon (Rozerem) is a highly selective, potent MT1 and MT2 melatonin receptor agonist approved for the treatment of insomnia due to prolonged sleep onset. Ramelteon is the first approved hypnotic that is not classified as a controlled substance. Ramelteon selectively targets the melatonin receptors MT1 and MT2, which are believed to be involved in the regulation of the circadian rhythm.

Ramelteon is specifically indicated for the treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty in falling asleep. Rozerem may be well tolerated when administered for long treatment courses. Rozerem is supplied as a round pale orange-yellow film coated tablet. The recommended dose of the drug is one 8 mg tablet once daily, 30 minutes prior to going to bed.
