What Is Rheumatoid Lung Disease?
Lung abnormalities are not uncommon in rheumatoid arthritis.

Costochondritis is an inflammation of a rib or the cartilage connecting a rib. This is a common cause of chest-wall pain. Inflammation or injury involving the chest muscles is another common cause of chest-wall pain.

Pleurisy is an inflammation of the pleura, the lining of the lungs, with subsequent pain.

Pleural effusion
Pleural fluid is normally formed in small amounts to lubricate the surfaces of the "pleura," which is the thin membrane that lines the chest cavity and surrounds the lungs. A "pleural effusion" is an abnormal collection of this fluid.

Chest pain
Chest pain is discomfort or pain that you feel anywhere along the front of your body between your neck and upper abdomen. Many people with chest pain fear a heart attack. However, there are many possible causes of chest pain. Some causes are mildly inconvenient, while other causes are serious, even life-threatening.

Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time.

Caplan's syndrome
Caplan's syndrome is inflammation and scarring of the lungs in people with rheumatoid arthritis who have exposure to coal dust.

Pericarditis is a disorder caused by inflammation of the pericardium, which is the sac-like covering of the heart. Pericarditis can be associated with systemic diseases such as autoimmune disorders and rheumatic fever.

Cardiac tamponade
Compression of the heart caused by blood or fluid accumulation in the space between the myocardium (the muscle of the heart) and the pericardium (the outer covering sac of the heart).
