FDA Defers Action on the New Drug Application for Milnacipran
October 18, 2008, The FDA wasn't able to take final action on the New Drug Application (NDA) for milnacipran, a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor for fibromyalgia management. The FDA couldn't provide the reason for the delay, but indicated that their assessment could be completed in a matter of weeks, but couldn't confirm specific timing, from Cypress Bioscience.
Development Status: Milnacipran
Cypress is developing milnacipran for the treatment of fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). Milnacipran is the first of a new class of agents known as norepinephrine serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or NSRIs, which increase the level of norepinephrine more than they do serotonin, from Cypress BioScience.
Milnacipran: Results of First Phase III Trial
While the results in our first Phase III trial did not achieve a p-value of less than or equal to 0.05, we believe the results support continued development of milnacipran as a treatment for FMS. The ongoing development program for milnacipran includes an ongoing second Phase III study and an additional third Phase III study, from Cypress Bioscience.

In experimental studies Milnacipran showed useful activity as adjunct in the therapy of Fibromyalgia and Lupus, both conditions with potentially devastating effects. In January 2006, Forest Pharmaceuticals and Cypress Bioscience agreed to commence a phase III multicenter study encompassing 1,200 patients with Fibromyalgia. Early results will be available by mid 2007, from Wikipedia.
