What is Systemic?

Definition: Systemic means pertaining to or affecting the whole body rather than localized. Systemic diseases or systemic illnesses affect the entire body as opposed to a single organ or body part.

Some systemic forms of arthritis include:

  • lupus (short name for systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE)
  • scleroderma (systemic sclerosis)
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis (the most common type of arthritis) is not considered a systemic form of arthritis.
