Cymbalta (duloxetine) drug information, dosage, side effects, drug interactions, and warnings. Cymbalta, generic drug name duloxetine hydrochloride, is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine dual reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI) antidepressant used to treat depression and other conditions. Cymbalta is also showing promise to relieve fibromyalgia symptoms.
Study: Cymbalta Decreases Pain in Fibromyalgia Patients
Study results indicate that fibromyalgia patients treated with Cymbalta (duloxetine) experienced greater reduction in pain severity one week after starting the medication compared to patients receiving placebo. At 3 and 6 months, patients on Cymbalta also showed improvement in how they felt overall since starting the medication when compared to placebo.

Duloxetine is an oral antidepressant that is similar in action to the antidepressants clomipramine and venlafaxine; like venlafaxine, the drug belongs to the Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor class. Like venlafaxine, duloxetine inhibits the reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine and is often referred to as a 'dual' inhibitor.

Cymbalta (duloxetine) has been approved by the FDA. Cymbalta targets two chemical messengers in the body, serotonin and norepinephrine. According to a report in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, Cymbalta seems to be effective in treating the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia in women, but not in men.
