Methotrexate Alone May Be Sufficient for Early Rheumatoid Arthritis

Methotrexate alone may be the appropriate course of treatment for some patients with early rheumatoid arthritis. Several studies have shown that one-third of patients responded well to methotrexate alone. According to Rheumatology News, long-term success can be expected for patients who respond well to methotrexate alone.

If, at some point, a patient requires more than methotrexate alone, Enbrel or another TNF blocker can be added to their treatment regimen. In early rheumatoid arthritis, prednisone may boost the effect of methotrexate, too.
