Simponi (Golimumab) Approved by FDA for Three Types of Arthritis

By , About.com Guide   May 1, 2009

Follow me on:

Simponi, alone or in combination with methotrexate, was approved by the FDA on April 24, 2009 for the treatment of moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis, active psoriatic arthritis (alone or with methotrexate), and active ankylosing spondylitis. Simponi is a TNF-alpha blocker -- the same class of drug as Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira.

Simponi is given by subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once monthly. That's a less frequent dose than either Enbrel or Humira -- good news for patients! Remicade is administered through an I.V. The newest TNF blocker, Simponi, performed well in clinical trials. Approval of Simponi has been highly anticipated.
