Hip Resurfacing or Hip Replacement - Which Is Better for Arthritis Patients?

Sunday February 22, 2009
Although it's becoming a more popular treatment option, hip resurfacing is not appropriate for all patients with hip arthritis, according to experts. Conventional total hip replacement is still a better choice for some. We wrote about this once before: Hip Resurfacing Not the Best Option for Every Arthritis Patient. I also found a great article on the Ortho SuperSite which discusses when it's the right time to resurface.

The article emphasizes the importance of carefully considering the benefits and risks of both procedures. You must discuss your options with your doctor. I believe your recovery is enhanced by full understanding of the goals of surgery. Don't ever be afraid to ask your surgeon why he is choosing one over the other -- and you should start by learning about both.
