Actemra / Tocilizumab - What You Need to Know

Actemra, generic drug name tocilizumab, is the first humanized interleukin-6 receptor-inhibiting monoclonal antibody under development by Roche to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Actemra is administered intravenously (through an IV).

Interleukin-6 is involved in immune and inflammatory responses. Actemra inhibits the interleukin-6 receptor, thereby blocking interleukin-6. Actemra is the first drug to do this, making it a new approach for rheumatoid arthritis treatment.

  • How has Actemra performed in clinical trials?
  • What side effects have been associated with Actemra?
  • What concerns some critics of Actemra?

In November 2007, Roche submitted a biologics license application (BLA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking approval for Actemra to reduce rheumatoid arthritis signs and symptoms in adults with moderate to severe disease. Approval is expected within a few months. Read more in What You Need to Know About Actemra (Tocilizumab).
