Total Knee Replacement - What You Need to Know The first total knee replacement was performed in 1968. The procedure is one of the most important orthopedic surgical advances of the 20th century. Every year in the United States alone, more than 300,000 knee replacements are performed. The majority of knee replacement patients -- upwards of 90% -- have a successful outcome following surgery.
