Joint replacement surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed on the shoulder. In this operation, a surgeon replaces the shoulder joint with an artificial metal ball for the top of the humerus and a plastic implant cap for the scapula. There are other surgical options however. Mayo Clinic has an informative article (with illustrations) about shoulder arthritis and shoulder surgery options. Shoulder surgery may relieve pain and improve shoulder function. Discuss your options with your doctor.
