Joint fluid analysis is a laboratory test performed on synovial (joint) fluid. After the appearance of the fluid is checked, it is looked at under a microscope and undergoes chemical analysis. The results give clues regarding possible causes for joint swelling.

Removal of joint fluid has a dual purpose - diagnostic and therapeutic. Finding the cause of joint swelling is the goal but removal of fluid may also help relieve pain and pressure on the joint. Steroid injections can be given at the same time. Learn more about joint fluid analysis.
