Ankylosing Spondylitis Patients Require Special Attention

Thursday September 7, 2006
A rigid, inflexible spine is among symptoms associated with ankylosing spondylitis. About 500,000 Americans reportedly have ankylosing spondylitis, one of the inflammatory forms of arthritis classified as spondyloarthropathies. The restricted movement of the spine and possible position the spine can assume as it becomes fused may require special care in certain situations.

Medical emergencies are a good example. Clearing airways, splinting, and transporting can injure if medical personnel don't take special care to adjust for the needs of the ankylosing spondylitis patient. A quick movement can fracture the spine and damage the spinal cord. According to the Spondylitis Association of America, emergency room horror stories exist. It's the responsibility of every patient to be sure medical records are up to date. Carrying a medical alert card or wearing an alert bracelet is helpful, as well as having a family member or friend ready to advocate for you if there's time.
