Enbrel was the first TNF (tumor necrosis factor) inhibitor approved in 1998 for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Enbrel is also referred to as an anti-TNF drug or TNF blocker. Enbrel is genetically engineered to be like the receptors in the body which bind to tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha).
Biologic response modifiers which bind TNF-alpha (currently there are three - Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira) help reduce inflammation and prevent joint damage. Many patients have had great success with Enbrel or drugs in the same class. Learn more about The Facts of Enbrel.
