Floyd Landis, Tour de France Cyclist, Will Have Hip Replacement After Race

Thursday July 13, 2006
Floyd Landis, one of the Tour De France cyclists said to have a good chance of winning, is racing to the finish line with a severely damaged hip in need of hip replacement surgery. Three years ago, Floyd Landis fell on gravel during a downhill ride while training in California. Landis broke his hip and severed the blood supply to the joint in the fall. After three failed surgeries, Landis developed avascular necrosis, also known as osteonecrosis. According to ABC News, Landis will have hip replacement surgery after the tour ends July 23rd.

Doctors, fellow athletes, and fans are amazed at Landis' spirit and determination. Learn more about Landis' medical condition, and the hip replacement surgery he must still undergo.
