Obese or Overweight Young Adults More Likely to Eventually Need Hip Replacement Due to Severe Arthritis
Researchers in Norway found that adults who were obese or overweight had a higher risk of needing a hip replacement later in life due to severe arthritis. If the person was already obese or overweight before age 25, the risk was very high.
The researchers used national registries to gather their information and results were published in Arthritis and Rheumatism March 2006. The study involved 1.2 million people. BMI (body mass index) was also considered. People with a high BMI were two to three times as likely to need a hip replacement than adults who were normal weight. BMI was less significant when people in there 50s or 60s were considered. Clearly, being overweight when young had the greatest impact on needing a hip replacement later.
