Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy for Scleroderma Patients
Sunday January 8, 2006
Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy (MIE) is a new procedure which may be used to treat some scleroderma patients who have esophageal dysfunction (impaired function of the esophagus that occurs when smooth muscles in the esophagus lose normal movement possibly causing swallowing difficulties, chronic heartburn, or inflammation). Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy may allow such patients to experience less post-operative pain and fewer complications than traditional esophagectomy surgery, according to a report from the Scleroderma Foundation.
