Orencia (Abatacept) For Rheumatoid Arthritis

Monday December 26, 2005
Orencia (abatacept), the first T-cell co-stimulation modulator for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis was approved by the U.S. FDA on December 23, 2005. Orencia, a fully human soluble fusion protein, works by selectively modulating a co-stimulatory signal which is required for full T-cell activation. Activated T cells play a central role in the inflammatory cascade leading to the joint inflammation and destruction associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Can Orencia be used alone, with methotrexate, or with one of the TNF blockers (e.g. Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira)? Here is what you need to know about Orencia (Abatacept) For Rheumatoid Arthritis.
