Cherry Juice Concentrate Cures Gout and More? FDA Warns Companies About Unproven Claims

By October 26, 2005

Follow me on:

The Food and Drug Administration has issued warning letters to 29 companies that manufacture, market, or distribute products made from cherries or other fruits. The companies were warned about making unproven claims on their web sites and product labels, and violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The companies cited market dried fruit, fruit juice, and juice concentrate for treating or preventing gout, arthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, and other ailments.

According to research eating bing cherries may help people who suffer from the pain of gout or other forms of arthritic inflammation. The FDA is cracking down on marketing tactics fueled by unproven claims.

(1) Sharon Thompson says:

I have never been a believer of the cherry juice concentrate, but let me tell you, I tried it and I am so impressed that my friends are tired of hearing how well I have come along. I had Gout on the bottom of my foot where the second toe is, swollen, inflamed and so painful to walk that I could cry. I also have had two knee surgeries in the last 8 yrs. and very painful still going up and down steps, bending, etc. the Arthritis was taking over. Low and behold within six days the pain subsided about 40 per cent. Two weeks yesterday (6-5-06) and the Gout is gone, I now can even stomp my foot on the ground. Knee is about 80 per cent better. I even danced around my house, which for 8 yrs. I had to give that up. I can even walk down steps now without holding on for dear life, or walk down backwards holding on. I have NEVER been so excited about how I feel now with the gout and arthritis. I could not stand up over a toilet for yrs without terrible pain, shaky legs and knees popping and cracking all over the place. For the first time this past week end I did, came out and told my friends what I accomplished, like a kid in a candy store. You don’t realize the little things mean so much when you finally can do them again. I will never never be without my daily cherry juice, not to mention it tastes great. Please anyone who has this problem, trust me, IT WORKS!!!!
Thank you Cherry Juice Concentrate

Good for you! The FDA are a bunch of controling fools in bed with the drug companies. They DO NOT want people to find cures from the goodness of God’s bounty…whatever would they do? What a loss of $$ for them all in this “a pill for all ills” society!
I tried the cherry juice concentrate per my naturopath for a stomach upset/bloating/constipation from all the raw, sprouted sunflower seeds I eat. Amazing results! I never felt better. Don’t tell the government, though!

The FDA needs to just disappear. They DO NOT want anyone to get better. They are drug pushers and are totally and completely ignorant. Personally, most of whatever they say is NOT good for you…I will try because they are liars! And thanks to you Sharon and D for your truth and I’m soooo glad you are both feeling better!!! Best of luck to you and all the others out there!! Take care of yourselves the way YOU believe works….NOT what the FDA or anyone else says! God Bless!

(5) Andrew Holden says:

Cherry juice ‘may help’ – but that’s true of everything. My Doctor warned about wasting money on ‘snake oil’ treatments that ‘might not’ deliver all they promised! Well I have gout and it has been unresponsive to some VERY expensive drug therapies. I’ve been prescribed allopurinol, sulphinpyrazone, colchicine and indomethacin. All these have appeared to work for short periods before the gout has flared up again big time – and that’s alongside ‘lifestyle’ improvements incuding cutting down on meat and alcohol and watching the purine intake. My Doctor admits he is clueless – and the specialist consultant is no better!

In short I don’t think that cherry juice is any better or worse than ‘proper’ treatments. If it works for you then great – if not try something else. At least Cherry Juice can’t do you any harm (unlike some of the FDA approved drugs) and at least it contains lots of antioxidants and vitamins!

(6) Dave J says:

The FDA wants to help control the billions made in the pharmaceutical industry. Cherry Juice/Cherry consumption works to prevent/relieve symptoms of gout. I’m a long time sufferer of gout and have successfully controlled it when I’ve been disciplined enough to consume my ration of cherries. When I don’t, attack recovery is 1-2 days, instead of 1-2 weeks. I’ve had some attacks subside in as little as 2 hours with a can of bing cherries and a quart of water. Prescription medications didn’t work near as well.

An old friend told me a few years ago that her husband had gout and that she gave him 20 cherries a day. Canned supposedly worked well for him. Now 10 years later, my husband has gout and I give him 20 fresh cherrys daily. When fresh cherries are out of season, I give him a handful of dried cherries. By the way, canned cherries do not really work as well as fresh or cherry juice.

(11) JOHN says:

You know when the FDA pays so much attention to something like this, it MUST be very helpful. They are afraid of something so simple breaking the monopoly on the drug cartel. I have know for a long time that most, if not all, disease states can be reversed without synthetic and toxic medications. I think people are waking up. Maybe someday people who are “diagnosed” with “incurable” disease can actually stay in this country and have the freedom to seek and receive the kind of treatment they want, without putting physicians in jeopardy of losing their license and/or going to jail for even recommending a natural, inexpensive non-toxic treatment. I mean, people have already been doing some of these things for thousands of years. Is it really about the safety of people or protection of big pharma?

I have had a little soreness for the last couple months in my right foot. Last night; it got so sore after work that all I wanted to do was lay down and watch tv so my wife and I went out to Price Choppers and found Sour Cherries in a Jar Sweetened). I ate a small dish of them when I got home. This am; my foot feels great.
A friend of mine told me he takes 4 or 5 sour cherries whenever an attack occurs. He said he feels relief almost instantly and then goes to work as a supervisor at a casino.

I am 51 years old and exercise daily including racquetball 3x a week. During and after racquetball tournaments I used to suffer from muscle cramps and struggled with plantar faciiatis and achilles tendon problems. So convinced I now buy it on line by the case.

In the west coast, you can find it from grocery stores like NewLeaf, Rainbow Grocery or Wholefoods, check your local granola, grocery type market. They should run $15 to $20 for 8 oz concentrates.

With that said, I also buy it by the case on line. There are a couple of places that I get my organic cherry concentrate from regularly, stocking up when a sale’s on. I also get the cherry butter as well, it’s great on toast and bagels.

(17) Annie says:

After months of niggling pain in my big toe joint, I had my first gout attack last week. After about four days and lack of sleep from the pain I skeptically tried some cherry juice figuring I had nothing to lose. The only medication I had been taking prior to the juice was Ibuprofen. Two hours after my first drink my pain had 90% gone and I truly was amazed, stunned at the results – a decent nights sleep at last!! Over the next two to three days I only had minimum pain coming and going before the pain had completely gone. For me, this has been the quickest results from natural “medication” I have ever experienced.

I first bought concentrated cherry juice on E-bay, to try it. We found it the other day at Henry’s Mkt. It was about $4.94 for an 8 oz. bottle…which is much less than the E-bay purchase. I had 22K of knee surgery for unknown knee pains. It turned out that when my doctor cut into my knee it was filled with gout! After 3 months of recovery my OTHER knee flared up out of the blue with the same gout type “just kill me pain”. My neighbor told my to eat cherries and see? The next day those cherrys wiped out 95% of the pain. Something that all the pills (vicodan) couldnt do to either of my knees.

Cherrys are a real treatment for gout! I buy 16 oz cherry juice for $6 on the web.

I am convinced that the bing cherries that I have been eating have drastically helped my right hip. I have moderate to severe arthritis in my right hip. I could no longer run, and walking had become very difficult for me. I had developed a bad limp and I was in constant pain. After eating cherries for about three weeks, I have noticed a big difference. I still have the arthritis, but it is much less severe. I even ran a few days ago without a lot of pain. I am hoping that this improvement will continue. When cherries are out of season, I am going to drink the concentrated cherry juice.

The FDA would have a different take on it if they were rolling around their bed in pain. Cherries work.

I can understand that there is a need for there to be some proof in order for companies to make health benefit claims.. but can someone please tell me how it is legal for Enzyte to run disgusting adds and it is illegal for very legitimate claims about cherry juice and oat bran to be illegal. It’s not ok unless you are scamming people, unbelievable.

it does work, and the FDA doesnt want us to do anything that helps naturally because they are in kahoots with all the drug companies. so its up to you try the juice or eat the pills, the juice doesn’t have the side effects that the pills do and it costs less and tastes great

(31) Greg says:

As someone who has worked for more than 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry, it saddens me how little people understand the role of the FDA. Briefly, the FDA’s role is to ensure that medications are as safe as possible and that all health benefits are based on scientifically designed, clinical trials. Most natural remedies that make amazing health claims (such as cherry juice for gout)have never been tested in clinical trials which is why the FDA issued the warning. One last point, if a drug company could make millions of dollars from cherry juice for the treatment of gout it would!

(32) Grace says:

For those having trouble finding cherry juice, another option is dried cherry powder in capsule form.
I discovered my two years of suffering with knee swelling and pain was gout, after it suddenly worsened after eating a bunch of nitrite-free hot dogs.
I started with 3 cherry capsules 3 times a day, and noticed a difference right away, but really saw major imporovement at the 6-week mark.
It’s been nearly two months now, and I also noticed my toenails are clearing, they looked yellow and thick, but the bottom halves are now normal, where they’ve grown out.
Of course, I am also eating less meat and no sausages or other organ-containing meats– avoiding mushrooms and beans as well.

Celery Seed in capsule form is also supposed to work, if you don’t respond to cherries you might give it a try.

From personal experience, a six ounce glass of cherry juice plus 2 750Mg.of Black Cherry Extract when taken before bedtime, to alleviate pain and swelling at the onset of a gout attack has the same efect as taking Cataflam 50 medication. (34) Susan says:

I have always believed that home grown fruits and veggies are the way to stay healthy. If you grow it all the more better for you. Medicine is not the safest route for you. Do your homework and do not believe everything you hear. No guarantee they the meds prescribed will help you. They will more than likely hurt you first. Your condition has worsened because now you have to deal with the side effects from these meds. Don’t kid yourselves the drug companies don’t want you getting any better or they would be bankrupt. Our governments are not any better they don’t want drugs to make people well. They are encouraging the sickness industry not wellness.
Cherries offer the highest amount of antioxidants around and they are easy to take along, fresh, or dried. Offer a simple solution for many picky eaters they can be used in place of raisins. Eat as many as you can we all know our own limitations. I strongly agree with other posts that the drugs companies and the governments are together so that people don’t get well and they are encouraging more corruption and illness in the world. They also want to control the limitations on our farmers who grow our foods. Do you know what you are eating? Is it grown here or on another content? Is it really fresh or chemically engineered. No wonder they are so many people with stomach problems and allergies. Do your homework and don’t be so trusting with your health. Susan

(37) john says:

After taking tart cherry juice (with much success) for gout, I tried it when I started to have pain in my palm. As I had had “trigger finger” about nine months ago I recognized the pain as an indication of the same problem. The cure for my first trigger finger was an injection of cortisene after weeks of pain. The cherry juice did the trick in about seven to ten days, with very little pain in that time. Never even missed a day of golf!

I take 2-3 tablespoons daily straight form the bottle.

To #31 above: If you have worked for more than 10 years in the pharmaceutical industry, you know that the FDA is trying to keep people from using anything non-pharmaceutical because they are in cahoots with eh pharmaceutical companies. Sure, the “ROLE” of the FDA is SUPPOSED to be to ensure that medications are as safe as possible and that all health benefits are based on scientifically designed, clinical trials. BUT, many natural remedies that make amazing health claims have never been tested in clinical trials because no drug company can get a patent on a plant! The only way a drug company could make millions of dollars from the idea of cherry juice for the treatment of gout would be to come up with a CHEMICAL version of the cherry juice which tyhey could patent. If you doubt my statement, think of Sudafed, which is based on a plant substance known as ephedrine or Ma Huang. FDA-approved drugs kill people too, so why not try something as benign as cherry juice to help with gout. Seems elementary to me, but then the drug companies would lose my business for that condition.

I know that cherries work for my achy shoulder. I CAN NOT move it without pain unless I take my cherry capsules. You can get them online (you can get the juice concentrate too) from a Traverse Bay Farms in the Traverse Bay area. I live in this area and am familiar with the FDA complaints against the cherry companies. There may not be a lot of clinical research (what farmer can afford them?) but what harm can this fruit do when you’re supposed to be getting more fruit in our diet anyway?

To #31. The FDA is not interested in our health. If so, pharmaceutical companies would not exist.
After my husband’s recent surgery and dealing with doctors, who are pimps for the pharm companies and seeing every possible test ($) given a chemo port offered even before the surgery and biopsy. MD’s do basically nothing anymore. Everything is referred to a specialist. Of course, more cost to our health insurance.
I suggest that EVERYONE watch Michael Moore’s movie SICKO. They can sell something in Cuba for 50 cents that has an astronomical cost here in the states.
After watching so many commercials by the pharmaceutical companies and seeing the “side effects”
I will keep the disease.
God gave us everything we need on this earth.

(42) Ray says:

To #31. If the FDA is so interested in our being healthy, and in fact NOT in cahoots with the drug companies. Then why did they order the removal of lovastatin from red yeast rice? Lovastatin is a natural ingredient in red rice. In fact, Statin is the most effective cholesterol lowering agent used in statin drugs. Get the connection their #31. lova-STATIN.. When the FDA discovered red yeast rice with lovastain could lower cholesterol naturally, They went to court to have lovastatin declared a drug and therefore red yeast rice is now subject to FDA regulations.
The FDA then ordered all companies who manufacture red yeast rice to remove the lovastatin from the product first. All they had to do was declair it a drug and off the shelves it went..So don’t tell me their on the up and up with cherry concentrate or anything else that takes money from their pockets. Ray

Well we all have to eat better and drink a lot of water. You do this when you buy the cherry juice concentrate- it forces you to drink a liquid.
I found that the cold filled bottle works better then the shelf stable. You have to put heat to the shelf stable bottles and they are brown in color. I can find the fresh cold fille bottle online for 13.50 a quart. This will give you a 32 day supply- much cheaper then drugs and works better.

I’ve had gout for 20 years; the first 10 years I used Allopurinol-(zyloorim) and Probenecid-(benemid, probalan) and I would always have have a flare up around the holidays due to overeating and drinking to much beer or wine. 10 years ago I started taking 500 mg Black Cherry Concentrate; in capsule form. And 500 mg of vitamin C; in soft chew form. Along with six 8 oz glasses of water daily; and I have been gout free for 10 years. So I know this works for me; I double dose the cherry and vitamin C. in November and December and try to eat & drink in moderation during holidays.

Cherry Juice Works! I have had gout for years – horrible painful espisodes in toe joints. My doctor wanted me to take all sorts of pills which I was reluctant to do as the side effects sounded worse than the gout! A friend said her Uncle is a Doctor in Bay Area and swears by using Black Cherry Juice Concentrate. He has recommended it to his patients to years( can you beleive that?) who are all gout free!! I ordered it on-line and have been gout free for over 1 year…..no drugs!!!!! 2 tbsps a day. I have absolutely no doubt that this miracle cure will threaten drug companies and those who regulate them!!

My husband had a very painful gout attack in his large toe which was going into its second day. He drank an eight ounce glass of water mixed with two tablespoons of black cherry concentrate. He felt 80 percent better within a few hours. He then drank another glass of the same mixture and could bend his toe without pain after 6 hours. Many “pharmaceutical drugs” are actually natural remedies that big companies co-op and then market as “miracle cures”. I say if you’re not allergic to cherries, try it. I bought the concentrate at an organic food store for about $6.00.

I never heard of trigger finger, but 2 years ago I developed back pain and my trigger fingers started popping when I bent or unbent. I began 2 oz tart cherry concentrate daily. Doctor said take it if you like–can’t hurt. Sometime in the ensuing year fingers quit popping– I didn’t even realize it and forgot to tell Dr. My hand & back pains are less but with spinal curvature, I have been in physical therapy last 3 months to strengthen core muscles. It seems to help and I am going to stay the course. I buy 32 oz for $18 at grocery. I understand the FDA’s point but they should demand a controlled study.

(52) Shaun says:

The purpose of the FDA is simply to ensure that the marketers of the world do not try to sell products as cures treatments or diagnosis for “medical” conditions unless the product has been tested and approved by the FDA. No system is perfect, but it does help to ensure that one of the most important areas of our lives, our health is not over marketed, and people are not hurt by possible lies.

However, with that being said, there are many homeopathic and natural remedies that individuals do claim help with medical conditions. At times the medical industries research what it is in the natural remedies that could be helping and develop medicine from that home remedy.

My doctor told me about cherry juice about a year ago and I have been drinking it every since. All I can say is it works and my uric acid has fallen back to a normal range and I can fell the difference, not only because I don’t have gout attacks any more but I am not full of energy. She only recommends the cherry juice concentrate from Traverse Bay area farms of Michigan because all of the cherry juice on the marketin is mixed with apple juice and other juices, yet they say cherry on the label. Now that is disceptive. But drinking the cherry juice concentrate, add a little water is on the only way to go.

I was actually informed by a RN that has gout, and a E.R. doctor that cherries is the answer, and also drinking lemon water.
The FDA warns about using the word ”cure” for a disease.
It’s all in the wording. If you say,” cherries may help remove uric acid which causes gout along with a proper diet”. The FDA couldn’t intervene. Here’s something to think about. A few years back the FDA said that saint johns wort had no contributing factors to help with possible depression, or mood enhancement. To my knowledge one of the side effects of the herb is sensitivity to ultra violet light. Is this not the same with prescribed depression medicine. i just finish eating a can of bing cherries, and drank two glasses of lemon water. Ill wait to see if the pain goes away. Bing cherries have high levels of anti-oxidants. Cant go wrong with doing healthy.

For those looking for Red Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate, Wal-Mart in my area (central Kentucky) stocks Riverridge brand Concentrate, since they are all about the same (super Wal-Marts) I imagine yours will also. They are stocked in mine in the refridgerated juice section where all the fancier juices are in small 13 oz bottles for $8.88, but you have to look for them they are in a bottle the shape of a squeeze type jelly bottle. Hope this helps someone it really helps my mother.

My doctor recommended the cherry juice for my arthritis and all I can say is it helps. They also have the national Cherry Festival.

(64) Lindy says:

My brother says cherry juice helps his gout. Another friend says it makes his gout worse. I tried it several times, but cherry juice seems to make no difference at all to me.
I have been given colchicine (it worked, but the side effects are worse than the gout); I have had acupuncture (the pain went away like magic for about a day, but then came back–and the Chinese herbs the acupuncturist gave me do absolutely nothing).
What does work for me is a prescription NSAID (the class of drugs that includes ibuprofen and naproxen) called etodolac. I was given etodolac for a bad shoulder but only used it rarely, so it was just good fortune that I noticed it helped with my occasional mild gout. When I came down with one of my once-every-couple-of-years full blown gout attacks I took a double dose of etodolac [I'm an enormous guy; regular sized people probably shouldn't do that] and within a few hours my toe was much better. I took 1 1/2 x doses twice more at about 8 hour intervals and within 24 hours the gout was completely gone. I noticed no side effects except mild grogginess which was probably due to disrupted sleep (the gout came on at night).
I looked it up, and while all NSAIDS have potential side effects (stomach bleeding is probably the most dangerous), etodolac appears to be relatively safe. For me, ibuprofen doesn’t help my gout and naproxen might help a little but only a little. If cherry juice doesn’t work for you, etodolac may be worth trying, it seems to work for me.

I tried the cherry juice concentrate (liquid) for gout and it didn’t work. I assumed I wasn’t getting high enough milligram doses. I then switched to Black Cherry Concentrate (250 mg capsules) and the gout left in just a few days. I also stopped taking allopurinol (300mg) because I found I didn’t need it with the black cherry concentrate capsules. I take 500mg a day. I have been gout free for 8 months now. I buy mine at GNC. It costs about $14 dollars for 120 capsules. I have also gotten another gout sufferer started on the black cherry and he has since started his sister on it. The best part is there are NO side effects. Black Cherry Concentrate capsules WORK!

Cherry helps vs inflammation and is good for blood vessels. Lemon juice in H2O (please don’t ruin it by adding any type sweetener) intimidates the hell out of gout–it also dissolves calcium from arteries (it saved my life). To do that it has to be used 2x/day on empty stomach for at least 2 months–I stayed on it for 6 months. Caution—the citric acid in lemons WILL harm teeth enamel if allowed to remain–drink fast, rinse 5x with plain water’ kidney stones also dissolve!!

I feel often I am so tired, I can’t function properly to effectively deal with my issues, but I’ve been taking this cherry juice concentrate as directed for about a week and a half now and I swear I’m sleeping better! Says takes about two weeks to see effects, so I am hopeful this continues and I sleep better and better!

(69) Richard says:

Don’t bash the FDA over this, they are doing what they are supposed to do. Some of these berry pill bottles do have claims they “cure gout”. I personally know that berries help reduce the uric acid content of your blood thereby diminishing an acute outbreak but it’s hardly a cure. These companies are falsely advertising cures when at best they are for managing pain and swelling.

I’m not saying the FDA is perfect and never screws up or anything along those lines but we do need some group that can watch over the claims on what is largely a placebo market.

(70) Sandy Reed says:

I don’t doubt at least some of the people in the FDA have good intentions. However, anytime I can avoid taking prescription drugs with bad side affects it’s my first choice. I know the drug companies are raking in the $$ these days… I’m still trying to find the right dose of cherry juice. I haven’t been taking it consistently very long. I take an aspirin every other day for foot pain, and would love to stop it, or get it down to one a week… When I have to take it, I take it with Kefir, yogurt etc. to coat my stomach. So far, I’m OK. Been taking aspirin like this for years, but do want off of it!

(71) Ballina Bob says:

After regular bouts of gout in various parts of both my feet over several years I looked for a cure, rather than continuing to take Indocid to relieve the agony during flareups.

Concentrated Cherry juice diluted with an equal amount of water taken daily works. I started taking 100ml /day for about 3 weeks, then reduced to 60ml/day. I then had a blood test.

After 1 month my serum uric acid level (urate) has reduced from 0.52 mmol /L to 0.45 mmol / L and I have not had gout since.

1 Litre of Cherry Juice Concentrate costs me $29, but is certainly worth it.

(81) Ron C says:

I left the pharma industry several years ago after almost 25 years in a very satisfying career. My timing was fortunate enough to help launch some very significant drugs over the years: Zantac, Imitrex, Zofran, Ventolin, Ceftin, Seroquel, Zomeg, Crestor, and so on.
I don’t think any reasonably intelligent person questions the value of properly prescribed drugs taken at the right time at the right doses. What I think bothers most people, including myself, is how quickly doctors seem to make the decision that a prescription is needed for a condition that would have responded just as well to something natural. Don’t get me wrong–not all conditions can be treated naturally. But, because doctors have so much research and personal experience at their disposal, and the legal authority to prescribe, they do not have to wait around for an official FDA sanction to “prescribe” what they believe in. Including over-the-counter, natural, herbal, and even homeopathic options.

May 30, 2011 at 4:15 am
(82) Ron C says:

Americans would be surprised at how many doctors personally believe in, and take, many of the natural remedies they are often too afraid to recommend to their patients. They know from experience that multiple sources of soluble fiber lower bad cholesterol, sawtooth palmetto improves prostate health, fish oil is great for the cardiovascular system, HBP, and RA. They know tart cherry juice reduces the pain and inflammation of gout, that lemons (not oranges or limes) are high enough in citrate to reduce oxylate thereby reducing or elminating kidney stones, and that consuming less dairy reduces allergies, asthma, and inflammation.
But–they have pressure to prescribe drugs from their peer review boards, pressure from patients that want something that works right NOW, pressure from their clinic’s legal department to not tinker around with “unproven” natural remedies… you get the picture. In addition, for every hundred patients that tell their doctor they’ll lose weight, exercise, and do the preventive medicine thing, 95 of them won’t change a thing. They’ll be back, visit after visit, until eventually they just want their purple pill prescription so they can eat whatever they want and not have their stomach contents overflow and reflux when they’re lying in bed. Doctors are just human and eventually get tired of preaching change to a brick wall.
I ended up at this site just to add my own personal experience that tart cherry juice, not from concentrate, works for my gout symptoms. Regular cherry juice does not do anything for me and tart cherry from concentrate does not work very well.

Just to add to the chorus, cherry juice helps me out everytime I get a flare up. before I heard about the juice the only thing that helped me was a steroid, but they are expensive and hard to get from the doctors. I’ve also started on Alpha Lipoic Acid. The pain and soreness isn’t gone, but I DO notice a difference taking both. I didn’t want to start on Neurontin, gabapentin, Indocin, or any other $$$ drugs. I’m a firm believer in homeopathic/natural remedies. There are some things that need prescription medication, but I’ll take those when I absolutely have to. I see all the remarks here how wonderful Bing Cherry Extract is. I have to tell you that I’m living proof that Bing Cherry Extract works remarkably well. I have kidney stones (no gout) but my Uric Acid levels (even with lowered purine intake) are very high 5+. My doctor is the one who told me about Bing Cherry Extract so we found an Amish store that made their own and they had been using the BCE for years! It was a big pricey for a pint but it goes a long way! I’ve been drinking it now for over a year and not only have the kidney stones gone away I feel better (and it’s not a placebo effect, either… if you’ve ever had kidney stones you’ll know what I mean).
I have to tell you that the FDA KNOWS this works and that is why they are attempting to have companies stop sharing that it does work for specific physical challenges. It may not work for some but for many it does! in the long run, it’s better than $125.00 per bottle of meds that I take for 30 days and make my overall quality of life horrible!
I’m living proof it works… not just hearsay, not just placebo, it’s a fact that it can work (if it doesn’t work for you than what’s the worse it has done? You enjoyed the flavor and got some antioxident benefits!)
I just highly recommend you find an Amish store or some place that actually makes it correctly so you know you’re getting the correct benefits from it.

(149) Big Sore Toe says:

While in my 50′s, I endured 4 of the shock and awe jaw-dropping, excruciating pain events that is gout. Took an average of 10-days to recuperate without incurring doctor visits or bills for experimental but “approved” medicine.
A friend at the time mentioned (but didn’t tout or make wild promises) that he’d found a measure of relief by eating a few dark cherries a few times a week. I’m not given to believe in folk medicine or even testimonials from earnest laymen, but since I love cherries anyway, I decided to try them as a prophylactic. Now, either I’m enjoying the benefits of the placebo effect (no attacks in 6 years) or something else is going on. The one attack I had after going “cherry” occurred several months after I took a break due to cost concerns.
Will cherry juice work as well? A “daily” glass isn’t in my budget and unlike fresh/frozen dark cherries, there’s no guarantee the juice is pure dark cherry juice, and no guarantee that whatever is done in the way of pasteurization or storage degrades the active ingredient. There’s no way to know if the testimonials on this forum are from faddists who see religious icons in burnt toast or from sensible people who are not easily swayed by propaganda, or even from shills for the cherry juice companies. The products are expensive by mail-order. Lane Black Cherry Juice via Amazon is almost twice the cost of Nature’s Promise Naturals Black Cherry Juice and a penny more per ounce than R.W. Knudsen Family Just Black Cherry Juice at Giant Food via Peapod (possibly even less in store and on sale) and Knudsen’s says a serving size = 8 ounces(!) with no mention of how many cherries went into that serving. I won’t consider buying from a company like Lane that mentions unproven curative powers, not that I put much faith in the FDA either.
FWIW, I will on rare occasions feel a twinge in one toe or the other. I’ll take a Naproxen tablet just as I do when other joints start to ache. That and half a dozen cherries about twice a week are all I seem to need to still bound up and down steps and walk a mile and a half to stores and library. No promises or claims. A pain-free wish to all.

(153) rdx says:

It is sad but it is true. For all pharmaceutical companies, if they can’t patent the ingredients of the drugs, they will not do R&D and produce the drugs. So, something like this case, black cherry, even scientists can prove that it can cure gout. No companies will make it to the drugs store counter as they will never able to patent black cherry. That means no guaranteed profits. Same theory applies to many herbal remedies which could have scientific proof of medical benefits. But since they all have existed in the world thousand of years, no one can patent them. So, no more R&D, no drugs will be made of them.

Just had to replace ALL my meds for Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue/Anxiety due to a diagnosis of Drug Induced Lupus – have been wanting to get off them for awhile and was easing myself off of them but the diagnosis pushed me faster. Sleep and muscle pain my two biggest issues and all gone within one week of taking the tart cherry juice concentrate. My Dr was a Pharma pusher and it became quite obvious in the past year he was more interested in repeat business than actually helping me. Kept writing prescriptions even with symptoms of drug induced lupus which I have had for almost 2 years – finally out of frustration and gut instinct I changed Drs as the realization came that he had no interest in helping me as I wanted off the meds. Had enemia, high white blood count, positive ANA, liver issues, etc.. when my new Dr tested me. Had to cut off the last few pharma I had including Ambien which is not easy IMMED – tart cherry does what pharma was unable to do including NO side effects for Fibro and sleep. Will NEVER take another pharma med again!!! Big secret the Pharma industry doesnt want anyone to know is something called Drug Induced Lupus and Toxic Liver Disease – dont see any commercials on TV for that do you??? I’m sure if the FDA cared the public would be quite aware of that as well – Will have tart cherry juice on hand for many things in the future!!

(179) lj says:

The fda is a government agency. I doubt they care if you want to drink cherry juice for yourr foot or to cure your cancer. The fact of the matter is it is there to prevent major companies from taking advantage of people who are in need, like all of us. They do that by requiring lables clearly stating ingredients and any side effects. They also make sure the product actually does what the company says it does. That way you don’t have some rrandom jerkoff mixing arsenic and water in some dirty basement and selling it as a cure for aids or cancer or something else.
Sure the fda might make money buy working with the pharmaceuticals to give you over priced and probably slightly harmful drugs made of who really knows what but they dont care what alternative remedies you try unless people get sick and they have to do something about it.
