Christopher Columbus Suffered From Reactive Arthritis Not Gout

By , About.com GuideMay 6, 2005

Follow me on:

Famed explorer Christopher Columbus likely suffered from reactive arthritis, according to Dr. Frank C. Arnett, rheumatologist at University of Texas Medical School at Houston. At an annual conference where doctors suggest theories regarding the cause of death of historic figures, Arnett suggested the reactive arthritis was likely caused by food poisoning or a sexually transmitted disease. The cause of death, however, is unknown. It has previously been suggested that Columbus suffered from gout.
