Cymbalta Effective for Women With Fibromyalgia, But Not Men
Cymbalta (duloxetine) has been approved by the FDA to treat major depression and the pain of diabetic peripheral neuropathy. Cymbalta targets two chemical messengers in the body, serotonin and norepinephrine. According to a report in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatism, Cymbalta seems to be effective in treating the symptoms associated with fibromyalgia in women, but not in men.

Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Cymbalta, has submitted a supplemental new drug application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the management of fibromyalgia as well, based on the results of 5 clinical trials.Cymbalta may be the next medicine FDA-approved for fibromyalgia treatment. On June 21, 2007, Lyrica (pregabalin) was approved by the FDA for treating fibromyalgia in adults 18 years and older. Until the approval of Lyrica capsules, no medicine was specifically approved for the treatment of fibromyalgia.

I was dx in 2000 with FM. My doctor prescribe Cymbalta last Janauary. This drug has taken away the morning stiffness and much of the pain. While is hasn’t cure me, it has made my life more bearable.
I am a male and I have fibromyalgia as I was diagnosed 5 years ago. I have been taking Cymbalta for FMS for the past 3 months and it seems to help considerably.
I have had good results from 5mg Amitriptyline, and now I’ve started Cymbalta, but I’ve noticed no further improvement. I am male with FM.
