Link Between Anti-TNF Drugs and Lymphoma Not Clear

Wednesday July 21, 2004
Anti-TNF drugs such as Enbrel, Remicade, and Humira have been associated with a higher risk of developing lymphoma, a type of lymph node cancer. Recently reported results in Arthritis & Rheumatism, from a study which compared lymphoma rates in more than 18,000 rheumatoid arthritis patients to healthy people of similar sex and age, indicate that rheumatoid arthritis patients are twice as likely to get lymphoma than healthy people. It was concluded that current data are insufficient to establish a causal relationship between RA treatments and the development of lymphoma. Is it the disease state or the drugs hiking the risk of lymphoma?
