CDC Reports Lyme Disease at Record High Level
Saturday May 8, 2004
During 2002, a total of 23,763 cases of Lyme Disease were reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up 40 percent from the previous year. Growing populations of deer that support the Ixodes tick vector, increased residential development of wooded areas, tick dispersal to new areas, improved disease recognition in areas where Lyme Disease is endemic, and enhanced reporting may account for the higher incidence. Repellent use and routine tick checks, are key components of primary prevention, as well as simple landscaping practices. Learn more about Lyme Disease.
