FDA Approves Enbrel for Ankylosing Spondylitis

On July 24, 2003, the FDA approved a new indication for Enbrel (etanerceptl), a genetically engineered protein, for treatment of patients with active ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a chronic inflammatory disease affecting primarily the lower back and joints. Enbrel is also licensed for treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.
